Óbidos is a day-trip town: coaches arrive around ten and the main street stays shoulder to shoulder until late afternoon. Sunrise is the hour — white walls, empty lanes and low light along the ramparts. Bougainvillea peaks in summer. In December the town becomes a Christmas village, and in July the medieval market takes it over completely.
Can we walk the castle walls for photos in Óbidos?
Yes, the walls are free to walk and the loop takes about half an hour, but they are genuinely unguarded: no railing on the outer side, uneven medieval stone and drops of several metres. They are no place for heels, long trailing dresses or small children. Early morning is both the safest and the emptiest. The castle itself is now a hotel, so its interior is for guests.
