Tomar is one of Portugal's most fascinating and photogenic small cities. The Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage site founded by the Knights Templar in the 12th century, is an architectural masterpiece spanning Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, and Renaissance styles. Its famous Manueline window is one of the most ornate in the world. Below the castle, the charming old town features a Renaissance-era synagogue (the oldest in Portugal), riverside gardens along the Nabão River, and the beautiful Mata Nacional dos Sete Montes park.
