About Algarve

The Algarve is the heart of southern Portugal — one of Europe's most photogenic destinations and the country's sun-drenched southern coast. Towering golden limestone cliffs, secret grottos, and pristine beaches create breathtaking natural backdrops for engagement photography, couples sessions, honeymoons and family photoshoots in southern Portugal. Must-visit locations include the Benagil Sea Cave, Ponta da Piedade's rock formations in Lagos, the dramatic cliffs of Praia da Marinha, and the charming old town of Faro. Engagement photography in southern Portugal is especially popular in the Algarve thanks to the reliable sunshine year-round, soft golden hour light over the Atlantic, and the romantic isolation of hidden coves. Whether you're celebrating a honeymoon, a family vacation, a proposal or planning a destination engagement shoot, the Algarve's spectacular scenery guarantees unforgettable images.

Three coasts, three ideas for a couples shoot

Around Lagos the coast does the romance for you. Ponta da Piedade stacks golden arches and sea pillars beneath wooden boardwalks, and ten minutes on foot Praia do Camilo waits at the foot of a long wooden staircase — a small cove where a tunnel through the rock joins two pockets of sand. East of Carvoeiro, the cliff paths above Benagil and Praia da Marinha run along the top of the limestone past viewpoints over the sea caves: pictures made walking, not posing.

Praia da Falésia trades gold for ochre — rust-red cliffs, umbrella pines along the rim and a beach long enough to have a stretch to yourselves. For calm water, keep going east. Tavira sits on the Ria Formosa lagoon, and a short boat ride from town crosses to Ilha de Tavira past salt pans where flamingos feed. The sea there is flat and shallow, the light softer, the mood closer to a slow holiday morning than to a cliff-top drama.

One hour, two beaches — and what to wear

Most couples book a single hour and get two beaches out of it. Start on the boardwalks at Ponta da Piedade while the light is still high on the rock, walk down to Camilo as it warms, and finish at the foot of the stairs with your feet in the water. Nobody poses: you walk, you talk, and your photographer stays a few steps back and lets the coast do the composing. A one-hour session here starts from €310.

Dress for two surfaces. On the cliffs you want flat shoes with grip for the boardwalks and the steps, and fabric that moves — a long dress catches the wind up there and looks better for it. On the sand go barefoot, with a hem you don't mind getting wet. Soft colours read best against ochre rock and turquoise water: cream, rust, sage, faded blue. Skip busy prints; they fight the landscape.

Light, wind and tide through the year

The Algarve works in every month, just differently. In winter the sun stays low and gold for most of the afternoon and the beaches empty out; inland, the almond trees around Alte blossom in February and the orange groves near Silves hang heavy with fruit — a village chapter that never touches sand. In July the sun sets around 20:45, so a summer session starts near eight, and August mornings often carry a sea haze that turns the whole coast soft and pastel.

Two things your photographer checks the night before. Wind: the western headlands take it hardest — Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente are famous for it — while the coves near Benagil and the whole eastern coast sit sheltered, so a blustery forecast simply moves the session east. And the tide: a cove like Camilo shrinks to a strip at high water, while low tide opens rock pools and wet sand that mirrors the sky.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a typical couples photoshoot in Portugal?

Most couples sessions last 60 to 90 minutes, which gives you enough time to visit 2-3 locations and capture a wide variety of natural, relaxed poses and candid moments together. During this time, your photographer will guide you through different backdrops — perhaps starting at a scenic viewpoint, moving to a charming side street, and finishing at a waterfront or garden. Longer 2-hour sessions are perfect for couples who want to explore more of a city. Book your session with Photo Portugal and let us match you with the ideal photographer for your style.

What should we wear for a couples photoshoot?

The golden rule is to coordinate without matching — choose complementary colors and classic styles that reflect your personality. Solid colors and muted tones (navy, cream, sage, terracotta) photograph beautifully against Portugal's warm-toned architecture and lush green landscapes. Avoid busy patterns, large logos, or neon colors that can distract from you as a couple. Comfortable shoes are essential, especially in Lisbon and Porto where cobblestone streets and hillside viewpoints are common. Bring a second outfit if you'd like variety — many couples change halfway through longer sessions. Your Photo Portugal photographer will provide a personalized style guide based on your chosen location, season, and time of day.

When is the best time of day for a couples photoshoot?

Golden hour — the hour after sunrise or before sunset — provides the most flattering, warm, romantic light and is universally recommended by professional photographers. In Portugal, sunset times range from around 5:30pm in winter to 9:00pm in summer, so plan accordingly. Sunset sessions in Lisbon and Porto are especially popular because the westward-facing viewpoints catch the light over the river and rooftops beautifully. Sunrise shoots are quieter and give you famous landmarks nearly to yourselves, which is ideal for Sintra or heavily touristed areas. Midday sessions can work but require a photographer experienced with harsh light. Your Photo Portugal photographer will recommend the ideal timing for your specific location and season.

How much does a photoshoot in the Algarve cost?

Professional photoshoots in the Algarve start from €310. Beach, cliff, and cave photoshoots typically range from €310 to €450 depending on duration and locations visited.

What are the best locations for a photoshoot in the Algarve?

The Algarve's most photogenic spots include Benagil Sea Cave, Praia da Marinha, Ponta da Piedade in Lagos, Praia dos Três Irmãos, Praia do Camilo, and the dramatic cliffs of Carvoeiro and Albufeira.

How do I book a photographer in the Algarve?
