The honest answer is the light and the range. Warm Atlantic light lands on limestone that runs from gold at Lagos to ochre at Falésia, and within an hour's drive you can swap sea stacks for a lagoon, a whitewashed village or a sandstone castle — so one engagement session can look like three. And the season never really closes: a winter afternoon here is as photogenic as a July evening, only emptier.

It also fits how couples actually travel here. Many are marrying in the Algarve and shoot their engagement pictures on the same trip as the venue visit, so the save-the-date already looks like the wedding weekend. Others come for a winter break, when the cliffs are empty and the light stays gold all afternoon. Either way the session is guest-free by design: the two of you, one photographer, and a coast that empties once the day-trippers leave.

Cabo de São Vicente is the Algarve at its most dramatic: the south-western tip of mainland Europe, a lighthouse on the cliff and a sunset that drops straight into the ocean. It is windy almost by definition — hair and fabric in motion is the picture. Sagres softens it with the fortress and the sheltered sand of Praia do Beliche.

Lagos gives the classic turquoise frame: Ponta da Piedade's arches and the long staircase down to Camilo. Benagil and Praia da Marinha share a cliff path, the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, past viewpoints over the sea caves and Marinha's double arch — the small-couple-against-big-coast picture that save-the-dates love. Praia da Falésia repeats it in ochre: red ridges, pines and a beach so long the horizon is yours.

The east trades drama for calm. From Tavira a boat crosses the Ria Formosa to Ilha de Tavira, and Cacela Velha, a handful of houses with a fort and a church, looks down over the lagoon's flat water and sandbars — soft light, no wind. Inland, Alte gathers whitewashed streets around its springs and Silves pairs a red sandstone castle with orange groves that blossom in spring.

An engagement session is a couples shoot with two extra frames. The ring close-up — hands on the boardwalk railing at Ponta da Piedade, or on the wet sand at Camilo — and the wide save-the-date shot, taken in landscape with the two of you small to one side and clean sky or sea left for the text. Tell your photographer which format the card will be and they will leave room for it. Coordinated, not matching, outfits read best at that distance.

Timing follows the sun. In July it sets around 20:45, so a one-hour session starts near 19:45 and ends in the afterglow; in winter the gold begins mid-afternoon. August mornings often bring a sea haze — flattering on the calm eastern water, less so on the cliffs. One hour is enough for two beaches, since Marinha and Benagil sit on the same path, and it starts from €310. Flat shoes with grip up top, barefoot on the sand, and your photographer checks the wind on the western headlands and the tide in the coves.
