"Typical" is the median: half the packages cost less, half cost more. At the top end an hour reaches €590, ninety minutes €750, two hours €980, a half day €1,725 and a full day €3,220. No package in the catalogue can be priced below €345.

What moves the price in the Algarve

Distance along the coast. The Algarve is a coastline, not a city: Lagos to Tavira is more than an hour by car. A one-hour package works near where your photographer is based; a cliff at the other end of the coast means a longer booking, or a custom offer the photographer sends you in the chat, with the final price shown. Ask where they are based before you book.

Fewer photographers. Eleven photographers and 37 packages cover the whole region, far fewer than in Lisbon, so typical prices sit higher and summer dates go first. The floor is the same €345.

Edited photos. The typical hour gives you about 40 photos, 90 minutes 60, two hours 90, a half day 60 and a full day around 500.

Occasion. The Algarve is a wedding coast, and the day rates show it: full days start at €2,070 and the typical one costs €2,875, while half days run from €855, typically €980. Couples, families and proposals are booked by the hour.

Season and heat. There is no summer or sunrise supplement: a package has one price whatever the month or the hour. In July and August the beaches fill by mid-morning and the midday light is hard, so sessions move to sunrise or the last hour before sunset. May, June, September and October give softer light and emptier coves.

Group size. Groups of nine people or more pay 50% on top of the package price.

What the price includes

• Edited, high-resolution photos in a private online gallery, to download one by one or as a single ZIP. The package states how many and the delivery time.
• Payment held until delivery. The photographer is paid only after the photos are delivered and you have had time to check them.
• Cancellation. Seven days or more before the shoot: full refund. Three to seven days: half. Under three days: none. One change of date is free up to 48 hours before, and a change for bad weather is always free.
• Extra photos. Photographers often shoot more than the package promises. The extra frames stay in the same gallery for the 90 days it is open, and you can buy any of them one by one at the price the photographer sets.

Three sample budgets

A one-hour couples shoot at sunrise. Ponta da Piedade at first light, when the rock turns gold and the boats have not started yet. The typical hour is €435 for about 40 photos, the cheapest full hour €370, and Quick Booking from €310.

A two-hour family session. A long, flat beach such as Meia Praia in Lagos in the early evening, with room for children to run and no stairs to carry them down. Two hours start at €520 and typically cost €672, for around 90 photos. Quick Booking: from €470.

A proposal. The clifftop above Praia da Marinha in the last hour before sunset, with the photographer already waiting along the path. Ninety minutes is the usual choice: from €450, typically €538, with around 60 photos. An hour, from €370, is enough if you stay on the clifftop.

Where Algarve shoots happen

• Ponta da Piedade at sunrise. The headland south of Lagos: sea stacks, arches, clifftop boardwalks and a long stairway down towards the water. First light turns the rock gold; the boats and kayaks arrive later in the morning.
• Praia da Marinha. Arches and pinnacles below a clifftop path, with steep steps down to the sand. The clifftop works in the last hour before sunset, and in summer the beach fills by late morning.
• Benagil, by boat only. The famous sea cave is seen from the water on a boat trip, not reached on foot. From the clifftop path you can look down through the hole in its roof, but it is not a place to stage a session.
• The Carvoeiro boardwalk. A wooden walkway along the cliffs east of the village to the rock formations of Algar Seco, at its best around sunset.
• Tavira. The eastern Algarve: an old town on a river, an old arched bridge and the Ria Formosa lagoon. Gentler than the west, with less wind, softer cliffs and far fewer people.
