What Algarve wedding coverage costs, tier by tier

Photographers on our wedding page set their own packages, but the shape of the market is consistent across the region.

Elopement and intimate ceremonies (2–3 hours, €1,000–€1,250). Enough for the ceremony itself, family portraits and a proper couple session afterwards. You typically get 100+ edited photos in a private gallery. This is the tier most cliff-top elopements at Ponta da Piedade or Sagres land in.

Half day (5–6 hours, €1,250–€1,600). Starts at getting-ready and runs through the ceremony, the group shots and cocktail hour. Around 250+ edited images. If your party is small and you are not planning dancing until 2am, this covers everything you will actually look at later.

Full day (8–12 hours, €1,600–€2,000+). Preparations to the last dance, 400+ edited images, second shooter on request. Worth it for a full quinta wedding with a big guest list spread across a venue.

Two things to check before you compare numbers: whether travel within the Algarve is included (most photographers include the Lagos–Faro corridor and charge for Sagres or the west coast), and how many hours of the day are actually billed rather than "coverage until the cake."

The Barlavento: cliffs, sea stacks and staircases

The western half of the Algarve — the Barlavento, from Lagos out to Sagres — is what people picture when they say "Algarve wedding photos."

Ponta da Piedade, Lagos. Ochre sea stacks, arches and a lighthouse, with a wooden staircase of about 180 steps down to the water. The clifftop path is flat and easy in a dress; the staircase is not, so decide in advance whether you are going down. West-facing, which means the last hour before sunset is the hour. Praia do Camilo and Praia Dona Ana, Lagos. Both reached by long wooden staircases. Camilo's tunnel through the rock and the twin coves below are excellent, but plan around low tide — at high water the sand largely disappears.

Praia da Marinha and Algar Seco, Carvoeiro–Lagoa. Marinha's double arch is the postcard; the Seven Hanging Valleys trail starts there and gives you empty clifftop within ten minutes of walking. Algar Seco's boardwalk and rock windows work beautifully in flat midday light when the beaches do not.

Praia da Falésia, Olhos de Água. Red and ochre cliffs topped with umbrella pines, running for kilometres. Because it faces roughly south, low winter sun rakes across the cliff face all afternoon.

Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente. Europe's south-western corner: fortress walls, a lighthouse, a horizon with nothing in it. It is also reliably windy, which is either the best thing about your photos or the reason your veil ends up in the Atlantic. Ask your photographer to shoot it, then change somewhere sheltered.

The Sotavento side, and going inland

East of Faro the coast flattens into the Ria Formosa lagoon and long sand islands — a completely different look, and much quieter in summer.

Tavira. A Roman-era bridge, tiled facades, the church terrace above the castle, and salt pans just outside town where flamingos feed at dusk. Ilha de Tavira is a short ferry hop for empty dune-and-sea frames.

Faro and the Ria Formosa. The walled old town with storks nesting on the Arco da Vila, then boats out to Ilha Deserta for a beach with no buildings on it.

Silves and Monchique. Inland, the red sandstone castle at Silves sits above orange groves; Monchique climbs into eucalyptus and cork oak, with Fóia at 902 m as the highest point in the region. Cooler in August by several degrees, which matters more than couples expect.

Timing: light, tides and the month you choose

Sunset in the Algarve falls just after 21:00 in late June and around 17:20 in late December — a nearly four-hour swing that changes your whole timeline. Book a July ceremony at 17:00 and you will be shooting portraits in harsh overhead sun; the same ceremony in October at 17:00 lands you in golden light.

May–June and mid-September–October are the sweet spot: warm water, soft light, and beaches that are not shoulder-to-shoulder. July and August are hot, crowded and expensive — if you marry then, shoot early morning or the final hour of light and nothing in between. November–March is quiet and green, the sun stays low all day, and almond blossom appears inland from late January. Rain comes in short systems rather than all-day drizzle, and photographers here plan alternates as a matter of routine.

Tides matter more than the weather at Camilo, Marinha and the Benagil beaches. Ask your photographer to check the tide table against your ceremony time before you fix it.

How to compare photographers before you book

Look at one full wedding, start to finish — not a highlights reel. Anyone can produce twelve good frames; you are buying the other three hundred.

Ask these five, in writing: How many hours are actually included, and what triggers overtime? Is travel to my venue included? When do we get the gallery, and is there a sneak peek? Do you carry backup bodies and dual card slots? Have you shot at this specific location before, and at this time of day?

Language is worth confirming too. Most photographers working the Algarve speak English, and many speak a third language — profiles say which. Can we photograph inside Benagil Cave on our wedding day?

Not realistically as a wedding party. The cave is reachable only by boat, kayak or SUP, landing is restricted, and the swell decides on the morning whether anyone goes in at all. Couples who want that look book a separate short session, in swimwear or something you do not mind soaking, on a calm morning.
