Why the day-after session exists

On a wedding day, couple portraits get 20 minutes. They are squeezed between the ceremony and the group shots, at whatever time the caterer allows, in whatever light exists then — usually 15:00, usually harsh. Someone is waving at you. You are thinking about your uncle.

A day-after session removes all of it. You choose the hour, so you shoot at sunrise or in the last hour of light. You choose the place, so you can be on a clifftop that no wedding car could reach. Nobody is waiting for you. And because you have already been married for a day, you are relaxed in a way you simply were not at 15:00 the previous afternoon.

Practically, it also solves a real problem: if your ceremony was inland at a quinta, or in a hotel garden in Vilamoura, you may have no photographs at all of the coast people flew across Europe to see.

When to do it, and what "day after" really means

The name is loose. It works any time your wedding clothes and your photographer are both in the Algarve.

The morning after is the classic. Sunrise is around 06:15 in late June and 07:50 in December, and at that hour Praia da Marinha, Ponta da Piedade and Praia da Falésia are empty. You will be tired. The photos will not show it.

The evening after suits people who got married on a Saturday and are not getting up at 05:30 on a Sunday for anyone. Sunset falls just after 21:00 in late June and around 17:20 in late December.

Later in the honeymoon is also completely normal — three days after, in a different town, at the far end of the trip. Many couples fold it into the rest of their week and treat it as a honeymoon session in wedding clothes.

Before the wedding is a real option too, if you want the images for thank-you cards: same session, dress unruined, no jet lag. That is closer to an engagement or couples shoot, and photographers price it identically.

Where to shoot it in the Algarve

Ponta da Piedade, Lagos. Sea stacks, arches and a lighthouse, with flat clifftop access. West-facing, so it belongs to the evening. The 180-odd steps down to the water are optional and, in a long dress, a decision to make sober.

Praia da Marinha, Lagoa. The double arch, plus the Seven Hanging Valleys trail heading east — five minutes of walking buys you empty clifftop with the arch behind you.

Praia da Falésia, Olhos de Água. Red and ochre cliffs with umbrella pines on top, running for kilometres. South-facing, easy access, and almost impossible to fill with other people. The single best choice if you want the dress against colour.

Algar Seco, Carvoeiro. Rock windows and a boardwalk that works in flat light — the reliable option when the sunset plan collapses.

Praia do Amado and the Costa Vicentina. The west coast is wilder, colder and windier, and the wind is the point: this is where dresses actually fly. Ask for it specifically, and accept that your hair will do whatever it wants.

In the water. If "trash the dress" means what it traditionally means, do it here — the Atlantic is 18–23°C from June to October and the shallow coves at Praia Dona Ana and Camilo are calm at low tide. Warn your photographer in advance so they bring the right lens and stand somewhere they can get wet.

What to bring, and what actually happens to the dress

Bring the dress, the shoes you can walk in, and a second pair you do not care about. Sand and salt come out of most fabrics; a good dry cleaner in Portimão or Faro will handle a hem that has been in the sea, and photographers here will tell you honestly which locations are hard on a dress before you commit.

Bring a bag for the veil in wind, and a friend or a relative if you have one still in the country — someone to hold things is worth more than any prop.

Do not bring a bouquet from the day before. It will be dead. If you want flowers, a florist in Lagos or Albufeira will do a small hand-tie for far less than a wedding bouquet, and it will actually be alive.
