The whole walled town fits inside an hour's walk, so a short session already covers the gate, the main street and the walls. Óbidos is an hour north of Lisbon.

The Porta da Vila with its blue azulejo panels, the whitewashed length of Rua Direita, the castle walls with countryside on one side and rooftops on the other, the bougainvillea-covered houses in the side lanes, the church of Santa Maria on its small square, and the arches of the aqueduct just outside the gate.

Óbidos is a day-trip town: coaches arrive around ten and the main street stays shoulder to shoulder until late afternoon. Sunrise is the hour — white walls, empty lanes and low light along the ramparts. Bougainvillea peaks in summer. In December the town becomes a Christmas village, and in July the medieval market takes it over completely.
