Totally normal — and our photographers expect it. The trick is not to ask kids to pose at all. Instead, they observe and react: a kid running toward a balloon, lost in a piece of cake, holding a parent's hand, looking out at the ocean. The best birthday photos are unposed. We pair you with photographers who have years of kid experience: they bring small toys, ask silly questions, and let the child set the pace. Most shy kids warm up within 15 minutes. Bring a comfort object (favorite stuffed animal, snack) — works wonders.

Yes — cake smash sessions are one of the most fun bookings on Photo Portugal. Most are done for 1st birthdays, indoor (rented studio or villa) or outdoor (a clean grassy spot). You provide the cake (a smash-friendly small one — Portuguese bakeries do them for €15–25), an outfit you don't mind ruining (or one you do — many parents go with crowns and tutus), and a backdrop preference (neutral, themed, or floral). The session captures setup, first curious touch, full smash, and giggly aftermath. Bring wet wipes and a clean change of clothes for after.
