Every age has its magic. 1st birthdays (cake smash sessions) are hugely popular — messy, expressive, and unforgettable. Ages 3–6 give you toothy grins, big personalities, and natural play. 7–12 work great for milestone moments and group friend shots. Teens often prefer relaxed lifestyle setups over staged 'birthday' photos. Tell us the child's age when booking and we'll match you with a photographer who specializes in that range — pacing, props, and approach all change with age.

Totally normal — and our photographers expect it. The trick is not to ask kids to pose at all. Instead, they observe and react: a kid running toward a balloon, lost in a piece of cake, holding a parent's hand, looking out at the ocean. The best birthday photos are unposed. We pair you with photographers who have years of kid experience: they bring small toys, ask silly questions, and let the child set the pace. Most shy kids warm up within 15 minutes. Bring a comfort object (favorite stuffed animal, snack) — works wonders.

Yes — cake smash sessions are one of the most fun bookings on Photo Portugal. Most are done for 1st birthdays, indoor (rented studio or villa) or outdoor (a clean grassy spot). You provide the cake (a smash-friendly small one — Portuguese bakeries do them for €15–25), an outfit you don't mind ruining (or one you do — many parents go with crowns and tutus), and a backdrop preference (neutral, themed, or floral). The session captures setup, first curious touch, full smash, and giggly aftermath. Bring wet wipes and a clean change of clothes for after.

Photoshoots in the Azores start from €310, with most one- to two-hour packages between €310 and €450 depending on duration, the number of edited photos and the locations covered. Crater lakes and hot springs are spread across the island, so sessions that link several of them are usually booked as half days, with travel time built in.

On São Miguel, the twin crater lakes at Sete Cidades seen from the Vista do Rei, Lagoa do Fogo from the ridge road, the thermal garden and steaming ground at Furnas, the tea plantations at Gorreana, and the flower-terraced viewpoint at Ponta do Sossego on the east coast.

The Azores change weather several times a day, and the crater rims collect cloud even when the coast is sunny, so mornings are usually the clearest. Hydrangeas turn the roadsides blue from June to August, the driest stretch of the year. Winter is green, wild and dramatic. Whatever the season, build slack into the plan and expect to move things.
