What moves the price in Sintra

Length, and the hill. Sintra is spread over a wooded hill. Pena sits at the top, a bus or car ride above the old town; the Quinta da Regaleira is a ten-minute walk from the centre; Monserrate and Cabo da Roca need wheels. An hour gives you one place done well. Two hours give you two that are close together, such as the old town and the Regaleira. Pena plus the coast is a half day.

Tickets and permissions. Palace and garden tickets are not part of the photographer's price, and a professional session inside some of the parks needs the managers' permission. Ask your photographer which places need it before you book, not at the gate.

Occasion. Couples, families and solo portraits are booked by the hour. Weddings and elopements are quoted by the half day or the day: from €795 for a half day, from €1,150 for a full day, and a typical full day costs €2,012 with around 500 photos.

Season, crowds and sunrise. There is no summer or sunrise supplement: a package has one price whatever the month or the hour. What costs you in summer is time, because the palaces fill from mid-morning and every queue comes out of your session. The parks open after sunrise, so a sunrise shoot here happens in the town or on the coast.

Group size. Groups of nine people or more pay 50% on top of the package price.

What the price includes

• Edited, high-resolution photos in a private online gallery, to download one by one or all at once as a ZIP. The package states how many.
• Payment held until delivery. The photographer is paid only after the photos are delivered and you have had time to check them.
• Cancellation. Seven days or more before the shoot: full refund. Three to seven days: half. Under three days: none. One change of date is free up to 48 hours before, and a change for bad weather is always free.
• Extra photos. Photographers often shoot more than the package promises. The extra frames stay in the same gallery, and you can buy any of them one by one at the price the photographer sets.

A one-hour couples shoot at sunrise. The palaces are still closed, so sunrise means the old town: the square below the National Palace and the steep lanes above it, empty until the day-trippers arrive. The typical hour is €365 for about 30 photos, the cheapest €345, and Quick Booking from €310.

A proposal. Pena's terraces right after the gates open, or Cabo da Roca at sunset with nothing but ocean behind you. Ninety minutes is the usual booking: from €440, typically €460, with around 45 photos. An hour from €345 is enough at a single spot.

Where Sintra shoots happen

• Pena Palace. Red and yellow towers above a sea of forest. Be at the gate when the park opens: by ten the terraces are a queue. The grounds are ticketed.
• Quinta da Regaleira. Grottoes, towers and the initiation well, a spiral staircase sunk into the hill. The queue for the well lasts most of the day, so if the well is your shot, arrive at opening; if not, the gardens give you more.
• The old town and the National Palace. Two white conical chimneys, the square below them and the lanes climbing behind. Empty early, full from mid-morning.
• Monserrate. Lawns, exotic trees and an ornate palace, with far fewer visitors than Pena. The shade of the trees keeps the light soft through the day.
• Cabo da Roca. The westernmost point of mainland Europe, a short drive from town. The wind rarely stops, so hair and dresses fly, and the sun sets straight into the Atlantic.
