The baroque zigzag of the Escadório dos Cinco Sentidos at Bom Jesus do Monte, the flower beds of the Jardim de Santa Bárbara against the old archbishop's palace, the arcades of Praça da República, the Romanesque cathedral and its cloister, and the hilltop sanctuary of Sameiro for wide views over the Minho.

The Bom Jesus stairway is a monument first and a photo set second: it is quiet before nine and full of coaches by mid-morning. Its pale stone is bright, so an overcast day actually helps. Spring and autumn are the kindest seasons. Holy Week fills the city with processions, and the São João nights in late June are loud, crowded and wonderful.

You can do either. The Elevador do Bom Jesus is a water-counterweight funicular running since 1882 — the wooden cabins are photogenic in themselves and the ride takes about three minutes. For photographs of the stairway, though, climb it slowly from the bottom, where the fountains and landings line up one behind the other. Tickets for the funicular are sold at both ends.
