Spring and autumn are the kindest seasons. Holy Week fills the city with processions, and the São João nights in late June are loud, crowded and wonderful.
Should we take the funicular or climb the Bom Jesus stairway?
You can do either. The Elevador do Bom Jesus is a water-counterweight funicular running since 1882 — the wooden cabins are photogenic in themselves and the ride takes about three minutes. For photographs of the stairway, though, climb it slowly from the bottom, where the fountains and landings line up one behind the other. Tickets for the funicular are sold at both ends.
