The old town and Praia dos Pescadores are walkable, while São Rafael and Falésia need a short drive, which usually means a longer booking.

July and August are hot and genuinely crowded, with the beaches full from mid-morning — but sunrise at São Rafael is empty even then, and the town's late nights mean quiet mornings. May, June, September and October are warm with room to work. Winter is mild, quiet and often bright, with the sun low enough to light the cliff faces.

More than almost anywhere else on this coast. At high water the coves at São Rafael and Coelha shrink to a strip and the arches cannot be reached at all; around low tide the sand opens up and you can walk between the formations. Aim for the two hours either side of low water, and remember the base of the cliffs loses the sun first.
