Photo spot in Lisbon
Alfama
The oldest neighborhood in Lisbon, with narrow cobblestone streets, colorful azulejo-tiled facades, and authentic Portuguese atmosphere.
About Alfama
Get directionsAlfama is what you came to Lisbon for β a labyrinth of narrow lanes, azulejo-tiled walls, fluttering laundry, and the smell of grilled sardines that survived the 1755 earthquake more or less intact. It's the city's oldest neighbourhood and its most photographed: every corner is a postcard, every staircase frames a different view of the Tagus.
Best shooting strategy is movement, not destination. Have your photographer walk you through Beco do Carneiro, Largo das Portas do Sol (the iconic miradouro overlooking the river and SΓ£o Vicente monastery), the steep stairs near Largo de Santo EstΓͺvΓ£o, and the tiny Beco da Cardosa. Yellow Tram 28 passing on Rua das Escolas Gerais is a classic shot β wait for it rather than chase it. Wear something that pops against neutral stone β soft red, mustard, or denim β but flat shoes are non-negotiable on cobblestones.
Practical: best light is early morning (7β9am, before tourist crowds) or late afternoon. Sunday mornings the Feira da Ladra flea market spills into the streets, adding texture but also more bystanders. Free to photograph everywhere; respect signage in private patios. Tram 28 fills up by 10am β for vintage-tram shots come at 8am to the Largo Martim Moniz starting point. The whole district is walkable but expect 200m of vertical climb across a 90-min session.
