Totally normal — and our photographers expect it. The trick is not to ask kids to pose at all. Instead, they observe and react: a kid running toward a balloon, lost in a piece of cake, holding a parent's hand, looking out at the ocean. The best birthday photos are unposed. We pair you with photographers who have years of kid experience: they bring small toys, ask silly questions, and let the child set the pace. Most shy kids warm up within 15 minutes. Bring a comfort object (favorite stuffed animal, snack) — works wonders.

Yes — cake smash sessions are one of the most fun bookings on Photo Portugal. Most are done for 1st birthdays, indoor (rented studio or villa) or outdoor (a clean grassy spot). You provide the cake (a smash-friendly small one — Portuguese bakeries do them for €15–25), an outfit you don't mind ruining (or one you do — many parents go with crowns and tutus), and a backdrop preference (neutral, themed, or floral). The session captures setup, first curious touch, full smash, and giggly aftermath. Bring wet wipes and a clean change of clothes for after.

Photoshoots in Portimão start from €310, with most one- to two-hour packages between €310 and €450 depending on duration, the number of edited photos and how many beaches you cover. Praia da Rocha, the fortress and the Alvor boardwalks are a few minutes apart by car, so two or three settings fit comfortably into one session.

The ochre cliffs and rock stacks of Praia da Rocha, the Santa Catarina fortress above the mouth of the Arade, the wooden boardwalks crossing the dunes at Alvor, the fishing harbour and marina, and the smaller coves at Praia dos Três Castelos and Praia do Vau, where the rock formations come right down onto the sand.

The cliffs face south, so they take warm side light early and late and go flat at midday. Summer packs Praia da Rocha and the heat is real, yet sunrise there is almost empty even in August. Winter and early spring bring low sun, clean air and quiet beaches. Tides matter: some of the best rock formations are only reachable near low water.
