The painted doors of Rua de Santa Maria in the old town, the flower and fruit stalls of the Mercado dos Lavradores, the ochre walls of the Forte de São Tiago, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden above the city, the cable car with the whole bay behind it, and the seafront promenade out towards Ponta Gorda.

Funchal is mild all year, which is the island's great advantage. Mornings are usually clearest; cloud builds against the mountains through the afternoon and can swallow Monte while the seafront stays sunny. Spring brings the Flower Festival, and the New Year fireworks over the bay are famous. Summer is humid rather than scorching, and rain showers pass quickly.

The Teleférico do Funchal climbs from the old town to Monte in about fifteen minutes with the whole bay opening up behind you, and it runs daily from morning until early evening. It closes in strong wind, which does happen, so keep an alternative in mind. From the top you can walk into the Monte Palace garden or take the wicker toboggan back down.

We pair you with photographers who have years of kid experience: they bring small toys, ask silly questions, and let the child set the pace. Most shy kids warm up within 15 minutes. Bring a comfort object (favorite stuffed animal, snack) — works wonders.
