Benagil-Höhle

Benagil Cave is the Algarve's signature image — a vast natural sea cave carved into the limestone cliffs near Lagoa, with two arched entrances open to the ocean and a perfect circular skylight overhead. Sunlight pours through the oculus onto the small sandy beach inside, creating the surreal cathedral effect that put this single cave on every Portugal travel feed.

For photoshoots this is logistically the hardest spot on Photo Portugal — and the most rewarding. You can't reach the interior on foot. Options: kayak (40-min paddle round-trip from Benagil beach, €25/person rental), SUP, organised boat tour (drops you for 5–10 minutes inside, €25–35), or swimming from the beach when sea conditions allow (technically risky, no longer encouraged). Most photographers do the kayak option — slower, but you control how long you stay, you can get out on the small inner beach, and the dawn light through the oculus is otherworldly. Wear what you'd swim in; everything will get wet.

Practical: best season May–September, calm seas. Inside the cave the morning sun (8–10am) hits the inner beach directly through the oculus; midday the light is overhead and harsh; afternoon goes flat as the sun moves west. Book any kayak/boat at least 2 days ahead in summer. Bring waterproof bag for camera. Combine with the cliff-top Algar de Benagil viewpoint (small inland walk to a fence overlooking the oculus from above — different but also iconic). The closest base is Carvoeiro or Albufeira; Lagos is 40 minutes by car.
